Dress to Suit Your Body Shape & Improve Your Image in the New Year

No matter what your goals are for the New Year, an image that matches what you want to attract is a must.  One of the first steps is to dress well; that is, dress in a manner that is consistent with the image and message you want to present.  For example, if you want to attract new clients you’ll want to your image to match your brand and look credible; if you want to attract your soul mate you’ll want to dress in way that reveals who you really are – your inner and outer beauty. The first step in building an image you love and that works for you is to determine your body shape and the styles that suit it. When you know how to dress to suit your body shape shopping becomes enjoyable, dressing is easier, you look your best and attract more of what you want.

Even though we are all unique our body shape falls into one of these categories : Triangle (weight mostly on the bottom), Inverted Triangle (weight mostly on top), Hourglass (lots of curves), Rectangle (few curves) and Oval (rounded).

For example: A wrap dress diminishes curves. On a rectangle body shape where you’d want to increase curves this dress isn’t a good choice. A wrap dress on a hourglass body shape accentuates curves and is a good choice.

What makes us unique is that even though we fit into one of these categories, there are differences.  For example, Jane and Sally are the same height, weight and body shape but Jane’s waist is 1 inch longer than Sally’s and her legs are 1 inch shorter.  Therefore, to look balanced (the key to looking stylish) they will wear pants, skirts and jackets in different lengths. This is only a slight difference; imagine how many differences there are between women.

Manufacturers are not concerned about how clothes look on the average female but how it looks on models.  They create fashion looks for the ideal body type (balanced) – both vertically and horizontally. If you’re wearing styles that are not great for you but instead look great on models  you may be hiding your assets and dressing to make yourself look bigger, out-of-proportion, or unattractive. When you dress to suit your body type your clothes look like they were made for you.

The last thing we want to do is create an image that is not consistent with who we are; however, that’s what we might be doing when we are not aware of the impact of line, design, proportion and colour. Line and design is much more that wearing horizontal stripes, it is how the lines in a garment are formed, the shape and proportion of garments and how they are used to create the best look and how the lines of the body interact with the lines in clothes.
